Oh No! Another 'new beginning!"

My front door is open. The sunshine is pouring in, lighting up the terrazo floor. Speedo, my cold-blooded Chiwawa (that's how I stubbornly spell it) has moved to the front porch to warm his cold bones. For Speedo the day offers not only an opportunity to be thankful that he was born in Florida, but also pursue his daily quest to stay warm, take long naps, and locate bits of potato chip lodged in the living room rug. So yes, 2017 brings with it some potentially pleasurable, restful, and fattening opportunities.

As I write this it is 11:00 am, January 1, 2017, a little over 11 hours into the new year. So far, nothing new has happened. Of course I slept through 8 of those. But wait a minute,...here I am "blogging" away on the whoiam.band web page with the sun shine pouring in on a new calendar year. That's fresh! Soon I will be making my "to do" list for the coming week, which will be fraught with "new" things, plus a couple of old things like cut the grass. (My apologies to my northern friends.) If I break down the year 2017 into weeks, I have 52 weeks worth of opportunities to expand my horizons. Those of you who are numbers people may already be computing 365 days, or 8,760 hours, or 525,600 minutes to cut the grass, AND be blown away by doors opening and sunshine pouring in. Button line, our cups runneth over.

Last week, as I chatted with a woman at the gym, she expressed how she was NOT looking forward to January 2nd. "Why?" I asked. "Because all of those New Year's Eve Resolution people will be here clogging up the stairmasters." "But," she continued, "they'll be gone in a week or two." WOW, I'm thinking, I've been a "New Year's Eve Resolution" person more than once. Have a little grace, lady, sometimes those "front doors" are HEAVY and SWEATY and it takes more than one try to swing them fully open.

On the upcoming album, Who I Am...with you,  there's a song called Every Monday. The chorus goes like this, "Every Monday is a NEW GAME. Every Monday is a CLEAN SLATE. When you ask for another chance, you got a Monday coming your WAY. Get up / put on a new FACE. Monday Morning / this could be YOUR DAY." As risky as it is to give Monday morning a face lift, it is exactly where I sit today. Monday morning, 2017. Where as my friend at the gym complains, "Oh No, another new beginning!" I say, bring them on, all 525,600 minutes of them. Let the sunshine reign down, whether it be on snow banks or terrazo floors. Let the bits of potato chip hidden away in the rug be uncovered to reveal  spiritually fattening treasures. They're there, Just ask Speedo, you just have to "get up / put on a new face" and look for them.

At the risk of sounding cliche, I do wish you a Happy New Year from Who I Am. As the architect of this adventure, I will be working this year to 1. write new songs, 2. explore music marketing techniques in the digital age, and 3. recruit the players to bring Who I Am to the stage. AND some days, I will just open the front door and let the sunshine pour in. May 2017 warm your bones as well.
